I think the dubs are typical American trash, except Ishida who seems pretty natural to me. Renji got butchered in the dubs, wtf. I think Ichigo sounds too young, having orange hair doesn’t make him Naruto.
It just feels so artificial, the gasps, grunts, sighs, smirks are done so much more naturally in the Japanese. My main complaint is it seems like American voice actors can’t grasp the concept of a dark character in animation. Characters with depth that are supposed to be somewhat reserved and mysterious (from this clip I’m thinking Byakuya & Urahara) come off goofy. A lot of dubbers fail miserably at exuding confidence while remaining respectable. If you encountered any of the captains of the Gotei 13, I wouldn’t expect any of them to sound like a comedian nor sound 12, even Hitsuguya. A couple of them can be silly but they all know how to be quite intimidating. Dubs FAILLLL at that, except like I always bring up, Alucard in Hellsing.
I bet it’s because anime is the bottom of the totem pole for acting work in America. Unless you’re well-known like Crispin Freeman, you’re going to get one gig then be out of work for a long time. Crispin Freeman should play Grimmjaw in the dubs, that would rock!
